The Gate by Tibor Takács [1987]

Title: The Gate
Director: Tibor Takács
Starring: Stephen Dorff, Christa Denton, Kelly Rowan
Runtime: 85 minutes
Year: 1987

I remember catching the tail end of this when I was 12 or 13. I thought it was amazing then and now... it's still a good laugh.

Starts out with the usual 80's opening of parents leaving for vacation while the kids are left to be on their best behaviour. The older sister, Al, does what's expected and has a party. While her younger brother Glen and his friend Terry open the gate to a world filled with demons in his backyard.

This just might be one of those movies you had to see when you were a kid to enjoy. Or if, like me, you have the sense of humour of a 3rd grader and still laugh at fart jokes- you'll more than likely will find it entertaining as well.

Sometimes the acting is terrible but the heavy metal geekboy more than makes up for it. The demons are naked and more than cheesy, but I think they are cute and kinda want one as a pet. The ending is a little over the top in the 'aww' department and the last demon should of been sent back to the drawning table.

Recommended.

I actually went to see this movie on my first real "date" ever (showing my age...but I was too young to drive at the time and so my parents had to drop us off). I remember that the movie tries to build to this climax and crank up the tension by only barely showing the little demon things and then surprising you with the big baddie at the end, which might have worked well...except that every trailer and TV ad for the movie had already SHOWN the big baddie and little demon things, and even given away the ending! So the tension was kind of deflated. Luckily I had pubescent sexual tension to keep me awake through the whole thing...

Ah, who am I kidding? She didn't even let me hold her hand. :(

They were airing this alot on MONSTERS HD a few months back, and I was pleasantly surprised to find that it's just as fun now as it was back in '87 when I first saw it at the theatre (pretty sure I was on a date too Vicar.) Anyway, a little dated and flawed but yeah, still loads of fun none the less.

Aw, Vicar... you went to The Gate and that didn't ease her into 1st or 2nd base? Poor boy. ;)

Oh man, Karswell- you too? Gee, I hope you at least got some hand holding out of it!

If I remember correctly, she didn't have hands, or legs, or anything of the sort. In fact she was probably a bag of popcorn.

But she was totally HOT popcorn.

I have to admit, saw this in the theater too. Even saw the sequel for the two days it was in the multiplexes. Don't remember much about Part II, but I think it was basically the same movie made 7 or 8 years later. To be honest, all I remember about the first one is that the sister was kind of cute in that 80's hair kind of way.

Woah!! I used to love this one when I was younger. Haven't seen it for quite some time, but I remember almost crying when my VHS copy stopped working. It was completely worn down, due to how many times I played the fu*ker.

Oh yeah, almost forgot. I somewhat recall hearing about a remake of this. Supposedly it'll be done by the same director and everything. Strangely, I'm hoping it actually gets made. Don't ask me why....

I saw this one as a kid when it first came ou in the theaters. So '80s. And I love that Bananarama's Cruel Summer is on the soundtrack.

I'm loving the love for The Gate. Is it terrible I was just mastering the fine art of potty training when this was released? :)

A remake? Bring it on!
